New Jersey Hernia Repair
What is a hernia?
A hernia occurs when the inside layers of the abdominal muscle have weakened, resulting in a bulge or tear. This can allow a loop of intestine or abdominal tissue to push through the sac. Hernias cause discomfort, severe pain, or other potentially serious problems.
What causes a hernia?
Any condition that increases the pressure in the abdominal wall may contribute to the formation of or worsen a hernia. Some examples include, obesity, heavy lifting, coughing, and straining while using the bathroom.
When to seek medical attention:
If you find a new tender, painful and irreducible lump on your abdomen, it is vital to seek medical attention to avoid the risk of the hernia becoming strangulated or irreducible.
Quite often patients who seek certain cosmetic procedures such as an abdomonoplasty (tummy tuck) are in need of a hernia repair as well. Dr. Volshteyn, our board certified plastic surgeon, works with general surgeons to perform the procedures together.
