What is a breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation is typically performed on women who would like larger breasts for personal reasons, however, it can also be used if one breast is larger than the other, to create a more balanced physical appearance. Breast augmentation can also be used for mothers whose breasts lose too much breast mass after breastfeeding as well as in reconstructive surgery.
A key to successful augmentation is to create the correct size for the patient along with optimum placement on the chest wall.
You will meet with Dr. Volshteyn for a consultation before the surgery. At that meeting you should share your vision for how big you would like your breasts to be. It is important that the breast size is appropriate for your body type to maintain a beautiful, balanced look – one that you will be happy about and proud of for years to come.
What is the breast augmentation procedure?
Breast augmentation can be performed on an out-patient basis, under a general or twilight anesthesia.
There are two types of breast implants, saline and silicone.
Saline Breast Implants
For saline implants, two-inch long incisions are made in the armpit, under the breast crease, or around the areola, depending on the individual’s needs. Endoscopic methods can also be used. After a “pocket” is created for it, the empty implant is placed underneath the pectoral muscle from the chosen incisions.
Having the implant placed underneath the pectoral muscle instead of on top it has several benefits. The implant is given more support from the surrounding muscle, there is less chance for capsular constriction, and less interference with future breast examinations.
Once it is in the optimum place and secured, the implant is filled with the appropriate amount of saline solution. Because the incisions are place in inconspicuous spots, the scars will be less noticeable.
Silicone Breast Implants
Since silicone implants are pre-filled, a larger 3 inch incision is utilized. These implants are also placed under the muscle.
Many are under the impression that silicone implants are unsafe, however over the last 30 years, silicone has advanced greatly and after 5 generations of implants, they are considered just as safe as saline implants. Most women prefer silicone implants nowadays since they feel more natural.
What are the potential risks and complications of a breast augmentation?
All surgeries come with some level of risks or complications, but choosing a qualified and highly experienced physician as well as carefully following pre- and post-operative instructions, help to minimize any potential problems. Some risks associated with breast augmentation include infection, asymmetry, implant rupture or leakage, and capsular contracture. Capsular contracture happens when the scar tissue around the implant tightens, causing a hardening of the implants. Capsular contraction can be treated by correcting the implants.
What can I expect after a breast augmentation procedure?
After the surgery, your breasts will be bandaged for several days, after which you will need to wear a surgical bra as directed. You may feel tired and sore for a couple days after the surgery – be sure to take it easy and rest to give your body time to heal and adjust. While you will be able to notice a difference in size immediately after surgery, it may take a few weeks for swelling to completely go down so that you can see what your new shape truly looks like. You will be able to return to work and light activities several days after the surgery. Your breasts and nipples may be sensitive for up to a month after the surgery. Dr. Volshteyn will describe what you should expect as well as any precautions you should take following breast augmentation.
You no longer need to continue to be unhappy with the size of your breasts. Breast augmentation is successfully performed on thousands of women every year. If you have dreamed of a larger cup size and a curvier figure, there is nothing to stop you from attaining your dream. Breast augmentation is a big, yet rewarding, decision and it’s important to become fully informed.
